Southeast Missouri Pets
Project Scope: New humane education and adoption center
Location: 2536 Boutin Drive, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Project Delivery: Design-Build
This new 12,000-square-foot humane education and adoption center was built adjacent to the existing 1,236-square-foot building that was originally constructed in 1952 and had reached the end of its life. Southeast Missouri Pets struggled to get their project off the ground until a board member mentioned Penzel Construction and the design-build process. The Penzel Team was asked to explain how the process worked and if there was a chance the new facility could be built for the $3.7 million budget the organization was working on raising. With a few changes in the design, site and scope, the project was constructed for less than budget. The new facility includes separate ventilation systems to help control the spread of disease, surfaces that can be properly cleaned and maintained, group housing for cats that allows for interaction and space to roam, larger kennels to prevent disease and offer better comfort for the animals, proper drainage to keep pets warm and dry, and humane eduction space to encourage empathy and compassion in keeping with the Southeast Missouri Pets’ mission.
