Project Details
Project Scope: Historic renovation
Owner: Southeast Missourian Newspaper
Location: 301 Broadway, Cape Girardeau, MO
Project Delivery: Historic Renovation
This project entailed a complete renovation and updating to an 80-year-old, three-level, cast-in-place concrete building and an adjoining wood structure on the corner of Broadway and Lorimier. Thomas P. Barnett, a well-known St. Louis architect, designed the Missourian building in a Spanish Colonial Revival style to acknowledge Cape Girardeau’s Spanish heritage. Construction was originally completed in 1925. Though the buildings remained in exceptional condition, restoration and updating were required to provide a fresh look, a contemporary environment, and a more efficient infrastructure. Penzel Construction was called upon to be the design-build contractor for the project, which focused on both function and aesthetics. The facility is on the National Register of Historic Places.
“It was a pleasure for my family, the Rust family, to work with Penzel Construction during the renovation of the Southeast Missourian building…One thing that was very important to us about what Penzel did was that they did what they said they would do…Clearly they understand the importance of one’s word in business relationships.”
