Progress: New Cape Girardeau SportsPlex

Despite challenging weather, construction continues on schedule

Drone footage taken recently shows the progress of the new Cape Girardeau Sportsplex located at the northeast corner of Interstate 55 and U.S. 61, in the area known as Center Junction.

Last summer, The Cape Girardeau City Council approved a new indoor sports complex and entered into a development agreement with a team comprised of Midamerica Hotels Corp. and Penzel Construction for the building’s design and construction.

The 121,000-square-foot world-class facility will be funded by the city's 1% restaurant tax. The sports complex will include:

  • 6 regulation basketball courts that convert into 12 volleyball courts

  • 2 indoor collegiate soccer fields

  • baseball/softball training fields

  • batting cages

  • a host of other amenities.

The NUCOR metal building is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2017.

White structural steel was used for the portion of the structure that will house the two indoor collegiate soccer fields.

When asked why the color of the steel differs on one portion of the building, Phil Penzel, Penzel Constructions’s President and CEO notes, “White is more reflective than gray, red or black steel. The higher reflective quality brings more light into the facility naturally.”
